Ramsey Hill lies between Summit Avenue and I-94, from Dale Street to the Cathedral of St. Paul, within the Summit-University neighborhood. Ramsey Hill is the oldest area within St. Paul’s Historic Hill District, and includes perhaps the largest and best-preserved group of Victorian homes in North America, including the famous James J. Hill House and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s former home. Architecturally rich and varied, the homes on the hill range from Italianate and French Second Empire to Queen Anne, Jacobethan, Georgian Rival and Prairie in style. An area rich in history, Ramsey Hill’s residents are passionate about creating a community in which history lives in the present. Contemporary novelist Jonathan Franzen set much of his novel “Freedom” in a fictional Ramsey Hill neighborhood, continuing a literary tradition that also includes F. Scott Fitzgerald and, elsewhere on the hill, Garrison Keillor.
